Jade Emperor
Taoist supreme deity
The Jade Emperor is the supreme deity in Chinese folk religion and Taoist mythology, ruler of heaven and all realms of existence.
He governs the celestial bureaucracy of gods, spirits, and immortals, much as an earthly emperor presides over his court.
In popular belief, the Jade Emperor oversees human affairs and receives reports from lesser deities about mortal conduct, particularly during the Lunar New Year period.
He features prominently in classical Chinese literature, including *Journey to the West*, where he presides over the heavenly court that the Monkey King disrupts.
