joss

Small worship statue

Joss is a Chinese idol or cult image, especially as encountered by Western observers in temples or shrines.

The word comes from Portuguese *deos* (god), filtered through Pidgin English in Asian trading ports.

A joss stick is a thin stick of incense burned before such images: The temple smelled of joss sticks and sandalwood.
