Boko Haram
West African militants
Boko Haram is a militant Islamist group based in northeastern Nigeria, responsible for insurgency, mass killings, and kidnappings since the late 2000s.
The name, from Hausa and Arabic, roughly translates to "Western education is forbidden." The group gained international attention after abducting hundreds of schoolgirls in 2014: Boko Haram's attacks have displaced millions in the Lake Chad region.
