iodisation

Adding essential element

Iodisation is the process of adding iodine to something, most commonly table salt.

Iodised salt became widespread in the twentieth century to prevent iodine deficiency, which causes thyroid problems and developmental issues.

The term also applies to adding iodine to water supplies or other foods.

Also spelled iodization.
