cretinism

Congenital iodine disorder

Cretinism is a condition of severely stunted physical and mental development, historically caused by congenital thyroid deficiency.

The term is now largely replaced by *congenital hypothyroidism* in medical contexts.

Its connection to *cretin*—an offensive word for a stupid person—gives cretinism a dated, clinical harshness that modern medicine avoids.
