72-hour hold
Emergency mental commitment
A 72-hour hold is an involuntary psychiatric detention allowing mental health professionals to confine someone for evaluation and treatment for up to 72 hours without their consent.
The person must be deemed a danger to themselves or others, or unable to care for themselves due to mental illness.
Also called an emergency hold or, in California, a 5150 (after the relevant legal code): They placed him on a 72-hour hold after the suicide attempt.
