independent variable
Experimenter-controlled input
An independent variable is the factor deliberately changed or controlled in an experiment to observe its effect on something else.
In the equation y = 2x, x is the independent variable—you choose its value, and y depends on it.
The term appears throughout science, statistics, and mathematics: We manipulated the independent variable to test our hypothesis.
