covariate

Statistical control factor

A covariate is a variable that may influence an outcome being studied but isn't the primary focus of investigation.

In statistical analysis, researchers account for covariates to isolate the effect of the variable they actually care about: The study controlled for age and income as covariates.

Common in medical and social science research.
