importing

Shipping goods inward

Importing is bringing goods or materials into a country from abroad, the opposite of exporting: The company specializes in importing Italian marble.

The word extends to any transfer from outside to inside—importing data into a spreadsheet, importing ideas from other fields.

To import can also mean to signify or matter: It imports little what others think.
