if-clause

Hypothesis in grammar

An if-clause is the conditional part of a sentence—the portion that sets up a hypothetical or contingent situation: If it rains, we'll cancel the picnic.

The if-clause establishes the condition; the main clause states what follows.

Grammarians distinguish types based on likelihood: real conditions if you heat water, it boils, hypotheticals if I won the lottery, and counterfactuals if she had known.
