icefishes
Bloodless polar fish
Icefishes is the plural of icefish, any of several fish species adapted to extremely cold waters, particularly around Antarctica.
Some Antarctic icefishes lack hemoglobin, making their blood nearly colorless—a unique adaptation among vertebrates.
The word also functions as a verb: to icefish is to fish through a hole cut in frozen water.
We icefished for walleye on the frozen lake.
