hypogean

Under the earth

Hypogean means underground or subterranean, describing organisms that live beneath the earth's surface or structures built below ground level.

The term appears in biology for cave-dwelling creatures and in botany for plant parts that develop underground: hypogean germination, where seeds sprout with cotyledons remaining buried.

Also spelled hypogaean.
