hypogeal

Below the soil

Hypogeal describes germination in which the seed leaves (cotyledons) remain underground as the shoot emerges.

Beans and peas germinate this way, unlike plants with epigeal germination where cotyledons push above the soil.

The term extends to anything occurring or developing below ground level.
