hydrops fetalis

Severe fetal swelling

Hydrops fetalis is a serious condition in which abnormal fluid accumulates in a fetus's body cavities and tissues—around the heart, lungs, and abdomen, or beneath the skin.

It results from severe anemia, infection, heart defects, or genetic abnormalities, and often proves fatal without treatment.

The condition may be detected on ultrasound as generalized swelling.
