host-rock

Surrounding geological material

Host-rock is the surrounding rock in which a mineral deposit, vein, or ore body is embedded.

Geologists and miners use the term to distinguish the valuable material from the matrix containing it: The gold occurs in quartz veins within a granite host-rock.

Also spelled as two words or one: host rock, hostrock.
