e-readers

Portable library devices

E-readers are handheld electronic devices designed primarily for reading digital books and documents.

Unlike tablets or phones, e-readers typically use e-ink displays that mimic the appearance of paper and remain visible in direct sunlight: I loaded a dozen novels onto my e-reader before the trip.

The term sometimes extends to apps that serve the same purpose on other devices.
