homeotherm

Internally heated animal

A homeotherm is an animal that maintains a stable internal body temperature regardless of external conditions—what's commonly called warm-blooded.

Mammals and birds are homeotherms, generating heat through metabolism rather than absorbing it from their surroundings.

The term contrasts with poikilotherm (cold-blooded animals whose temperature fluctuates with their environment).

Also spelled homoiotherm.
