home ec
Sewing and budgeting
Home ec is an informal shortening of home economics, a school subject covering practical domestic skills such as cooking, sewing, budgeting, and household management.
Once a standard part of American secondary education and traditionally taken by girls, home ec has largely disappeared from curricula or been renamed to gender-neutral terms like "family and consumer sciences." I learned to make a decent omelet in home ec.
