hilling

Piling earth upward

Hilling is the gardening practice of mounding soil around the base of plants, typically done with potatoes, corn, and other crops that benefit from having their stems or roots buried deeper.

The technique encourages additional root development, protects tubers from sunlight exposure, improves drainage, and provides structural support for taller plants.

I spent the afternoon hilling the potato rows.
