seed potatoes
Spuds for sowing
Seed potatoes are tubers planted to grow new potato plants, not potatoes meant for eating.
Unlike most crops grown from seeds, potatoes are propagated vegetatively—each "eye" on a seed potato sprouts into a new plant genetically identical to its parent.
Gardeners cut larger seed potatoes into pieces, each with at least one eye: I ordered certified seed potatoes for spring planting.
