herniates

Pushes abnormally outward

Herniates means to protrude abnormally through a wall or membrane that normally contains it.

The term is almost always medical: a disc herniates when it bulges out from between vertebrae, and organs herniate when they push through weakened muscle or tissue.

The MRI showed the disc had herniated at L4-L5.
