Cro-Magnon

Ice Age European

Cro-Magnon refers to early modern humans who lived in Europe during the late Ice Age, roughly 40,000 to 10,000 years ago.

Named for a rock shelter in southwestern France where remains were first discovered.

The term often distinguishes these anatomically modern humans from Neanderthals, their evolutionary cousins.

In casual use, calling someone a Cro-Magnon suggests they're primitive or brutish: His table manners are pure Cro-Magnon.
