hatpins

Chapeau anchoring spikes

Hatpins are long, sharp pins used to secure a hat to the wearer's hair.

Popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when elaborate hats required anchoring, they often featured decorative heads of glass, jet, or precious metal.

Hatpins were sometimes carried as defensive weapons; some cities even passed laws limiting their length.
