Pound key character
The hash sign is the symbol #, also called the number sign, pound sign, or hashtag symbol.
It appears before numbers to mean "number" issue #7 and before words on social media to create searchable tags #throwback.
On telephones it's the key in the lower right corner, often called pound.
The symbol gained massive cultural prominence with the rise of Twitter hashtags in the late 2000s.
