imperial harem
Sultan's secluded women
An imperial harem is the secluded quarters in a palace where the wives, concubines, and female relatives of an emperor or sultan lived, along with the eunuchs who guarded them.
The term also refers collectively to the women themselves.
The Ottoman imperial harem was the most famous, wielding significant political influence through the sultan's mother and favorites.
Court intrigue flourished within the imperial harem.
