half-tones

Adjacent piano keys

Half-tones are the intermediate shades between the lightest and darkest areas of an image.

In printing and photography, the term refers to a technique that reproduces continuous tones through patterns of dots—smaller dots for lighter areas, larger for darker: The newspaper photo showed visible half-tones up close.

In music, a half-tone is the smallest interval in Western scales, the distance between adjacent piano keys.
