gun ports
Ship's weapon holes
Gun ports are openings in the side of a ship or fortification through which cannons or other weapons can be fired.
On naval vessels, gun ports were typically fitted with hinged covers that could be closed to keep out water during rough seas: The captain ordered the gun ports opened as they approached the enemy fleet.
The term also applies to similar openings in armored vehicles or defensive walls.
