light wells
Vertical window shafts
Light wells are vertical shafts built into structures to allow natural light and air to reach interior spaces that would otherwise be dark.
Common in dense urban buildings where windows can't face outward, they create a narrow open column from roof to ground floor: The bathroom's only window opened onto a light well.
Also called air shafts when ventilation is the primary purpose.
