deadlights
Fixed nautical window covers
Deadlights are thick glass panes or metal covers fitted over a ship's portholes or windows, protecting them from heavy seas.
The term extends to any fixed porthole that doesn't open.
In horror and nautical fiction, deadlights sometimes refers metaphorically to eyes that appear lifeless or glazed: His deadlights stared up at nothing.
