guest-friendship
Host-visitor mutual obligation
Guest-friendship is the ancient custom of hospitality between host and traveler, creating a bond of mutual obligation.
The concept, central to Greek *xenia*, meant hosts protected and fed guests, who in turn respected their hosts and might reciprocate later.
The relationship could extend across generations: His grandfather's guest-friendship with the family meant he was welcomed as kin.
