gradients

Rates of change

Gradients describe rates of change across a distance or dimension.

In its most concrete sense, a gradient is a slope – the steepness of a road or hill measured as the ratio of vertical rise to horizontal distance.

This extends to any gradual transition: a temperature gradient shows how heat changes across a space, a color gradient blends smoothly from one hue to another.

In machine learning, gradients are mathematical values that guide how neural networks adjust during training.
