yellowhammers
Bright European buntings
Yellowhammers are bunting birds with bright yellow plumage, common across Europe and parts of Asia.
The name has nothing to do with hammers—it derives from an old word for a type of bunting.
In the United States, yellowhammer also refers to the northern flicker, a woodpecker with yellow underwings, and serves as a nickname for people from Alabama: The Yellowhammer State.
