gluon

Strong force carrier

A gluon is the elementary particle that mediates the strong force—the force that binds quarks together inside protons and neutrons.

Unlike photons, which carry electromagnetic force but have no charge themselves, gluons carry "color charge" and interact with each other, making the strong force behave very differently from electromagnetism.

The name comes from their function as the "glue" holding atomic nuclei together.
