gaveling

Banging for order

Gaveling is using a gavel—the small wooden mallet judges and meeting chairs rap to call for order or signal a decision.

The term usually describes the act of controlling proceedings: The chairman kept gaveling for silence.

To gavel something through is to push it to a vote quickly; to gavel someone down is to silence them with the gavel's authority.
