gavelling

Striking for order

Gavelling is the act of using a gavel—the small wooden mallet judges and auctioneers use to call for attention or signal decisions.

A judge gavels the courtroom to order; an auctioneer gavels a sale closed.

The chair kept gavelling but couldn't quiet the delegates.

Also spelled gaveling.
