Garters are bands worn around the leg to hold up stockings or socks.
Before elastic waistbands, garters were essential undergarments—either simple bands below the knee or straps attached to a belt or corset.
Modern garters are mostly decorative, associated with lingerie or wedding traditions: The groom removed the bride's garter and tossed it to the groomsmen.
