garpike
Long-snouted freshwater predator
Garpike is another name for the gar, a freshwater fish with an elongated body, long snout full of sharp teeth, and hard diamond-shaped scales.
These primitive fish, found mainly in North American rivers and lakes, are sometimes called garpikes because their slender shape and toothy jaws suggest a pike, though the two fish are unrelated.
The name is used interchangeably with gar in most contexts.
