gag rule

Mandated legislative silence

A gag rule is a regulation that restricts or prohibits discussion of a particular topic.

The term originated in the U.S.

Congress, where rules from 1836 to 1844 automatically tabled antislavery petitions without debate.

Today it applies to any formal prohibition on speech: The company's gag rule prevents employees from discussing salaries.
