fur trading post
Wilderness barter station
A fur trading post was an outpost, typically in remote wilderness areas, where trappers and indigenous peoples exchanged animal pelts for goods like firearms, tools, blankets, and alcohol.
These posts served as commercial hubs during the North American fur trade from the 17th through 19th centuries: The Hudson's Bay Company established fur trading posts across Canada.
Many later grew into permanent settlements.
