fretboards

Where frets sit

Fretboards are the flat surfaces on the necks of guitars, basses, and similar stringed instruments where players press strings against metal frets to produce different notes.

The term appears in discussions of instrument construction, materials, and playing technique: The guitar has a rosewood fretboard.

Also called fingerboards.
