soundholes

Guitar body perforations

Soundholes are openings cut into the body of a stringed instrument—violin, guitar, cello—that allow sound to resonate and project outward.

The shape varies by instrument: the f-holes of a violin, the round hole of an acoustic guitar.

Without soundholes, the vibrating air inside the instrument's body would remain trapped, producing a muted tone.
