foot-soldier

Rank-and-file fighter

A foot-soldier is an infantry soldier—one who fights on foot rather than on horseback or in vehicles.

The term extends figuratively to anyone doing the unglamorous ground-level work of an organization: Party foot-soldiers knocked on doors across the district.

The hyphen is optional; *footsoldier* and *foot soldier* also appear.
