folkway

Informal community practice

A folkway is a traditional custom or practice that emerges naturally within a community—not formally codified as law, but understood as the normal way things are done.

The term comes from sociology, where it describes everyday behaviors like greeting rituals, table manners, or holiday traditions: Tipping is a folkway in American restaurants.

Unlike mores, folkways carry mild social consequences if violated—raised eyebrows rather than outrage.
