flying aces
Elite combat pilots
Flying aces are highly skilled fighter pilots, originally those credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft in combat.
The term emerged from World War I, when pilots like the Red Baron achieved celebrity status.
Now it extends to anyone who demonstrates exceptional skill in aviation or, figuratively, mastery in any competitive field: He's a flying ace on the basketball court.
