flying circus

Acrobatic aviation show

A flying circus is a team of stunt pilots performing aerial acrobatics at public exhibitions, popular in the early twentieth century when aviation was still a novelty.

Barnstormers would travel from town to town, setting up temporary shows.

The term gained cultural resonance from Monty Python's Flying Circus, the British comedy troupe, lending it absurdist associations: The whole conference turned into a flying circus.
