air marshals
Plainclothes flight security
Air marshals are armed law enforcement officers who fly on commercial aircraft to prevent hijackings and terrorist attacks.
They travel undercover, dressed as ordinary passengers, and are trained to respond to threats in the confined space of an airplane cabin.
The position expanded dramatically after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The air marshal sat in an aisle seat near the cockpit.
