floor general

Team's offensive orchestrator

A floor general is a basketball player—typically a point guard—who directs the team's offense on the court, calling plays, controlling tempo, and making strategic decisions during live action.

The term borrows military imagery to emphasize leadership and tactical command: He's not the fastest player, but he's a true floor general who makes everyone around him better.
