hockey assist
Pass before pass
A hockey assist is the pass before the pass that leads to a score—crediting the player who set up the play two steps back from the goal.
The term comes from ice hockey, where assists are officially tracked for both the final and second-to-last pass.
In figurative use, it acknowledges indirect but meaningful contribution: I'll take the hockey assist on that deal—I introduced them last year.
