finger count
Hand-based enumeration method
A finger count is the practice of using fingers to enumerate or track quantities, often seen in children learning arithmetic or adults doing quick calculations.
In sports, especially baseball, a finger count refers to the catcher's signals to the pitcher: The catcher put down a finger count for a fastball.
The phrase also describes any rough tally made by counting on one's fingers: A quick finger count showed we were two people short.
