number system
Digits and rules
A number system is a method for representing and expressing numbers using a consistent set of symbols and rules.
The most familiar is the decimal system, which uses ten digits (0-9) and place value based on powers of ten.
Other systems include binary (base-2, used in computing), hexadecimal (base-16), and Roman numerals.
Children learn the number system before they can do arithmetic.
The term also applies more broadly to mathematical structures like integers, rationals, or complex numbers.
